Has anyone traveled to Brazil for Carnival?

Brazil is one of the destinations I want to do before reaching all the old and seedy! Does anyone has been there for Carnival? Any suggestions on airlines and hotels?

Not during the carnival, but on the eve New Year's Eve or New Year. State twice in Rio and I stayed either in Ipanema or Leblon because both are safer than like the Copacabana that answers another. Only be aware that any New Year (fireworks on the beach fabulous!) O Carnaval, prices rise as high as they want them to go because they know it is a time high tourist of the year. Personally I'm not sure if I'd go to Rio de Janeiro during Carnival, which seems to be a hectic time in Brazil!
